Day in history: first cornerstone laid for U.S. Capitol

Posted: Updated:

On this day in 1793, President George Washington laid the first cornerstone for the U.S. Capitol.  It was done in a Masonic ceremony.

The capitol burned in 1814. The stone and a silver plaque that accompanied it were lost.

In 1893, on the 100th anniversary, a new silver plaque was placed near the spot where the stone is believed to have been originally laid.
