Two dead after plane crash in Cullman County

Crane Hill, AL -

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a deadly plane crash in the Crane Hill area of Cullman County Monday afternoon.  Two people are confirmed dead in what is the third fatal plane crash in three days in Alabama.  According to the Cullman County Sheriff's Office, someone in the plane made a may day call to air traffic control in Atlanta saying weather had become a problem.

Sheriff's deputies, Emergency Management and firefighters converged on an area off of County Road 174 after hearing a plane went down around two o'clock.  "It cleared the fence, but nosed into the ground," says Cullman County Sheriff Mike Rainey.   Rainey added that the plane was on fire when rescue crews arrived to the scene.

Debris from the Mooney M20 plane is scattered all over a field.  Agencies were on the scene for several hours looking at debris and documenting the scene waiting for federal aviation officials to take over the investigation.  The plane will not be removed until the FAA completes its investigation.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of these individuals," said Rainey.

At this time the Sheriff's Office has not released the names of the victims.
