Interviews begin in Jefferson County Superintendent search

JEFFERSON COUNTY - AL -

The Jefferson County Board of Education has a tough decision ahead?  Who will be the next Superintendent of the system?

Board members began interviewing the five candidates on September 17th.

Dr. Stephen Nowlin, the Superintendent of Lee County Schools in Opelika, was the first of five finalists.

"This is just a greater chance to have an impact on more kids' lives, " says Nowlin.

Nowlin also says he has high expectations.

Nowlin agrees with how Jefferson County's budget is currently handled.

"I do believe on their approach that they need to maintain two months operating expenses," Nowlin says.  He also says that method speaks well of current Superintendent, Dr. Phil Hammonds.

The other candidates to be interviewed this week are as follows:

  • Dr. Karyle Green, Superintendent in New Haven, Indiana.
  • Dr. Julie Hannah, Director of Student Learning with the Alabama Department of Education. She has also served as Interim Deputy Superintendent in Jefferson County.
  • Alan Dale Robbins, Retired Superintendent of Gwinnett County public schools in Georgia.
  • Brett Stanton, Superintendent of Haralson County schools in Tallapoosa, Georgia.

The board hopes to name a new Superintendent by the first week in October.  Current Superintendent, Dr. Phil Hammonds, is set to retire in February.
