I-20/ I-59 interchange in Birmingham to US 78 being re-paved

Posted: Updated:

Phase One of Pavement Reconstruction Project on I-20, from the I-20/ I-59 interchange, in Birmingham to US 78 in Leeds has begun.

The project is to improve Interstate 20 from I-59 in Birmingham to State Route 4 (US 78) in Leeds began over the weekend.  The work is expected to take about four weeks.

Asphalt patching repairs will be done on the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-20.  Various lanes will be closed from the I-20/ I-459 interchange to the 1st Leeds Exit (Bass Pro Shop). Following the patching of both the eastbound and westbound lanes, they will be milled for slope correction and paved with asphalt binder, and will then be re-striped.  The estimated completion on this section will be approximately 4 weeks.

The eastbound lanes will reopen at 6 a.m. and the westbound lanes will re-open at 5 a.m. each day. There will not be any detours needed for this phase of the project.

ALDOT estimates about 72,000 vehicles travel each day past the Birmingham airport and continue on I-20 to the U.S. 78 exit that carries you to the Leeds Retail Outlet. The concrete and asphalt have worn out due to the heavy volume of traffic and heavy loads by large trucks.

Phase two is expected to begin in early Spring of 2013, where there will be lane closures/shutdown on this portion of the project.  More information will follow as the time nears.

The Alabama Department of Transportation's $38.6.5 million project will rebuild 9.8 miles of the interstate in both directions. The expected completion date for the entire project is early Winter 2013.
