JEFFERSON COUNTY - AL -

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is investigating an overnight homicide that occurred on Fairfax Avenue. Deputies responded to UAB West Hospital early Saturday morning in response to a gunshot victim. The person was transported there via private automobile. The victim, 19-year-old Jaterius Jacquel Mason, of Bessemer, was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

Deputies interviewed two people who drove Mason to the hospital. The individuals originally lied and told deputies the shooting happened while the victim was standing outside a car on Powder Plant Road. It was later determined Mason was actually shot at a home on Fairfax Avenue in Bessemer.

Carey Dmartin Williams, 19, of Bessemer has been identified as the shooter. He has been arrested for murder. A motive has not been determined.

Williams is currently being held in the Jefferson County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
