Rosh Hoshanna begins this weekend

Posted: Updated:

Sundown Sunday is the start of Rosh Hoshanna, the Jewish new year.  Yom Kippur, the day of atonement and the holiest Jewish holiday begins Tuesday evening.

It's a time  for Jews to reflect on their relationship with God and their fellow man. They are to look for ways to improve each of those relationships.

ABC 33/40 spoke with a Birmingham rabbi about her hope for the new year and for relations in the Middle East.

Rabbi, Michelle Goldsmith of Temple Beth-El says "A lot of us have our thoughts and prayers in the Middle East right now and my wish for my fellow Jews is that it doesn't spill over into Israel. We just pray that, when we say, when I say 'may you have a sweet new year', that it's not just a sweet new year for us in the United States, but for everybody around the world."

High holy celebrations conclude next Wednesday again with a final blowing of the shofar, symbolizing the end of the fast at Yom Kippur.
