CNN reports that new research could turn a hated pest into a life-saving hero.
The sight of roaches makes many people cringe, but for people trapped after a disaster, the sight of one could mean help is on the way. A team of engineers fitted roaches with electronics that allow the insects to be remotely controlled. They can also carry tiny cameras and microphones.
The advances make the roaches valuable in search and rescue operations. Roaches typically fit into tight spaces. Researchers say the roaches can get into places search dogs can't, and they're much cheaper than building tiny robots.
