Jefferson Co. bank robbery mirrors case in early Summer - ABC 33/40 - Birmingham News, Weather, Sports

A bank robbery in the Chalkville area leaves a community on edge. It's the second time this summer the BB&T bank has been held up and deputies are still trying to hunt down the armed robbers.

The bank robbery happened just after 3 Thursday at the BB&T branch on Chalkville Mountain Road. The get-away car was found in the Grayson Trace apartment complex just behind the bank. The suspect is still on the loose and deputies have put law enforcement on alert all the way to Atlanta.

"That's terrifying. The bank is actually not at all far from us," a woman who lives near the crime scene said.

Jefferson County deputies spent the evening combing through the neighborhoods surrounding the BB&T bank on Chalkville Mountain Road.

The security camera pictures show two men with their faces covered holding bank employees at gunpoint and demanding money even leaping across the counter to get to the cash. They fled in a black Honda Odyssey - stolen - with Georgia tags.

"For someone to hit a bank in the middle of the afternoon this isn't going to be their first robbery," Sgt. Brian Allison, Jefferson County said.

Flashing guns around, Jesse James style - put their hands on and leap over the counter. They held the employees at gunpoint while they raided the drawers," Sgt. Allison said.

Deputies found the black van right behind the bank. But the suspects were no where to be found. After the heist, they switched into what deputies say is a silver Dodge Charger and took off.

"This is our granddaughter and she was taking a nap," a witness who wanted to remain unnamed said. "Her room has sliding glass doors and all I could think of was, if they start shooting, one of the bullets go astray."

"To know that it's been robbed twice and they haven't been caught - the thought of that - what else could happen?" she said.

"It was unbelievable. All the cops were coming and you couldn't get in," Patience Turnbow, who lives in the apartment complex said.

Deputies are on the hunt for a small silver or gray sedan - possibly a Dodge Charger. If you have any information, you are urged to call the Jefferson County Sheriff's office or Crimestoppers.
