JEFFERSON COUNTY - AL -
Jefferson County Commissioners have approved the new plan for transitioning away from inpatient services at Cooper Green Mercy Hospital.
The chambers was standing room only - about 100 people came in support of keeping Cooper Green as a full service hospital, but what they found, was a plan to develop outpatient care. The new plan moves inpatient care from Cooper Green to other area hospitals. In a 3-2 vote, commissioners approved the "Hub and Spoke" model. That means, by ending inpatient care, Cooper Green will become a "hub" for primary care - focusing on diagnostic and wellness. The county will eventually develop the "spokes" or other clinics around the county. Commissioner Sandra Little Brown said during the meeting that she disagrees with the model, and asked to be removed from the transition team. Commission President, David Carrington, says the services could shift as early as December 1. He says now that they have a plan approved, the next step is finalizing all the details.
