MONTGOMERY-AL -

People who lost everything in the April 27th tornadoes know the importance of preparedness when it comes to severe weather. Some of those people got some good news Thursday.

The state has up to $8 million to help families repair or replace their homes. The money is from a federal grant. Homeowners can receive as much as $25,000.

"We are really seeing a lot of individuals and families who are homeless --literally displaced-- because of this disaster, still a year later. It's been so disheartening," said Felicia Watkins Jackson, the Executive Director of the Alabama Rural Coalition for the Homeless.

You have the next two months to apply for the funding. "We're hoping we can get those folks back into a stable living environment," Jackson added.

Three organizations that serve the damaged regions will take applications. Those are: the Alabama Rural Coalition for the Homeless, the Community Services Program of West Alabama, and the Community Action Partnership of North Alabama.

To be eligible, you must prove that you own your home, that it was damaged by the tornadoes and that you have not received any money from any other sources.

To start the application process, call 1-888-421-1266.
