65-year-old Fairfield man arrested for 32-year-old murder in California

Posted: Updated:

A 65-year-old Fairfield man was arrested Thursday in connection with a California cold case, according to a news release from Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Friday. Jefferson County deputies, along with a team of California authorities, arrested Thomas Young without incident under the authority of a Ventura County Murder Warrant for the murder of 15-year-old Stacy Knappenberger.

Knappenberger was found dead in her Oxnard, California, home July 30, 1980. An autopsy revealed she died from blunt force trauma and multiple stab wounds. Investigators also suspect a sexual assault occurred.

In 2000, authorities reexamined the evidence due to advances in technology, and DNA evidence that had been maintained since 1980 was submitted for testing by the Sheriff's Crime Lab. In 2010, a DNA match revealed Thomas Young as the suspect.

Young is currently in custody of the Jefferson County Jail. He is waiting extradition back to Ventura County, California.
