Alabama get clean gas waiver after Isaac

Posted: Updated:

Alabama is one of eight states getting temporary waivers for clean gas requirements.  It's because of the effects of Hurricane Isaac.
Governors requested the waivers because fuel supplies in the Gulf area were disrupted by Isaac.
The waiver lets gas stations sell less environmentally friendly fuel- which is normally reserved for winter-  in addition to the regular fuel they normally sell during summer, when ozone levels are higher.
The waivers were given to Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.  A previous waiver issued last week only applied to Louisiana.
Oil production is now returning to normal in the Gulf of Mexico.  The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement says only 3.5 percent of Gulf oil platforms remain evacuated.
