First Lady Michelle Obama Headlines the First Night of the DNC

Posted: Updated:

First Lady Michelle Obama headlines the first night of the Democratic National Convention with a speech in Charlotte, N.C. She'll make her case to millions of Americans for why her husband should serve another four years. Mrs. Obama will also spend the three days of the convention shoring up support among key constituencies. She plans to speak to the party's African-American, Hispanic and women's caucuses and address a gay and lesbian luncheon.

Delegates at the Democratic National Convention will vote today to adopt a platform they unveiled Monday. It echoes President Barack Obama's call for higher taxes on wealthier Americans while backing same-sex marriage and abortion rights. It's in sharp contrast to the Republican platform that would ban abortion and gay marriage, repeal President Obama's health care overhaul law and shift Medicare into a voucher-style program. President Obama will not arrive in Charlotte until later in the week.
