What can colleges do for the country ?: State's top colleges revealed

Posted: Updated:

Which colleges are having the biggest impact on our nation ? That's the question Washington Monthly tries to answer in its annual top colleges list.

Auburn University, among national universities, is tops in Alabama and 60th in nation.
UAB is number 2 in state, 142nd in the United States. The University of South Alabama came in 174th. Washington Monthly ranks the University of Alabama 195th in nation and 4th in the state.

Among baccalaureate colleges, Tuskegee University is tops in the state, number 3 in the country. Huntingdon College is 69th in the classification.

The magazine's list is based on 3 factors :  Research, which not only includes the amount of money spent on research, but schools whose graduates go on to earn PhDs and the number of faculty receiving significant awards. A second factor is social mobility, which gives colleges credit for enrolling  low-income students and helping them earn degrees. The third factor is service in organizations like ROTC and the Peace Corp.

The top colleges list also ranks masters universities. Alabama A&M leads the state in the classification and is 24th in the country, Samford University comes in at number 110, Alabama State University lands at 183, the University of Montevallo ranks 191rst, and Auburn-Montgomery comes in at number 197.

Judson College is the state's top liberal arts college--58th in nation, followed by Birmingham-Southern College (111), Talladega College (202) and Stillman College (214).

You can break down the entire list of the nation's top college at http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/college_guide/toc_2012.php
