BIRMINGHAM - AL -

The Jefferson County commission's regularly scheduled meeting became heated Tuesday morning.

Members of the commission voted 3-2 to close inpatient services and the emergency room at Cooper Green Mercy Hospital by December 1.

Dr. Sandral Hullet, CEO of Cooper Green Mercy addressed the commission,
wanting more time and an opportunity to try and keep inpatient services going, while operating in the $70 million budget.

"We asked for 101 beds, but to actively work starting on 50 beds, to keep those beds full and we can do that and to be more efficient," said Hullett.

Immediately after the vote, commissioners went into executive session. From there, the protestors moved to the commission offices, hosting a 'sit in' in front of commissioner Joe Knight's door.

While sheriff's deputies were brought in, the crowd dispersed and
no arrests were made.
