Extra, Extra! A new Birmingham newspaper is giving homeless men and women a voice. The Birmingham Voice, which began this year, is written and sold by the Magic City's homeless.
Ryan Hamilton-Schumacher and Hope Hamilton-Schumacher founded the newspaper after modeling it after a similar paper in Nashville.
"We're hoping that this spreads like wildfire in the homeless community and that they see this as a platform for them to be creative and express thoughts and ideas and for their voice to be heard," said Hope.
Each copy costs $1 plus optional tips. The homeless receive 10 free copies, and each additional copy costs 25 cents. The seller receives the rest plus tips.
