Who says everything is bigger in Texas?  Let's just say a Cullman County farmer could make many pumpkin pies and we mean a lot.  Trent Boyd has produced a pumpkin that shattered the previous Alabama state record of 534 pounds.  Boyd's pumpkin was 885 pounds. The heavyweight was sanctioned at the Indiana State Fair on August 10th.  The pumpkin set the new Alabama state record by 351 pounds and also claimed 3rd place in the standings at the Indiana State Fair.

So how do you grow a pumpkin that weighs 885 pounds?

Boyd obtained seeds from growers who produced pumpkins in the 1600 pounds range.  In April 2012, he planted several different seeds in pots and placed them under a grow light in his bedroom. Later that month, he planted 6 plants in prepared fields at his family farm in Fairview, Alabama.  He ended up with two main pumpkins which were growing rapidly. One of them turned out to be a whopper--the record pumpkin.

Keep in mind, the state of Alabama is not an easy place to grow a giant pumpkin due to humidity and hot weather conditions.  World record holders usually live in northern regions and sometimes grow in greenhouses to achieve perfect conditions.

You can get a taste of Boyd's smaller, but tasty work.  He runs Trent Boyd's Harvest Farm in Fairview. His specialty is strawberries and heirloom tomatoes. His produce is sold at local farmers markets.
