UAB holds white coat ceremony

Posted: Updated:

Sunday was a huge day for nearly two-hundred of America's future doctors.  UAB held its white coat ceremony.

It's a symbolic gesture as students enter their first year of medical school.  The ceremony was created in 2003, and UAB has been holding the ceremonies for its new students since 2006.

The ceremony is more than just a way to hand out a uniform to students.  That's because the white coat itself is symbolic.  Assistant Dean Dr. Steven Smith says, "It's a gift of the Medical Alumni Association.  It's a symbol of their service as physicians to their patients.  The white coat has become somewhat ubiquitous in medical clinics."
