Protestors shout, sing to save inpatient care at Cooper Green

Posted: Updated:

Dozens of protestors, including elected officials, pastors and Cooper Green patients, stormed Jefferson County Commission meeting Tuesday in an effort to save inpatient care at Cooper Green.

The Commission was expected to vote on whether to shut down the service, but instead commissioners delayed their decision. Protestors say, they believe, that delay was a direct result of their week-long meetings and protests, as well as demonstrations and sit-ins at the meeting. They say closing the service would hurt area minorities and the poor who depend on it.

Community activists Frank Matthews says the group is encouraged by the commissioners' actions, but the fight wages on. In fact, he says community activists will protest outside some commissioner's homes this week.
