Half of babies born in the United States are not breast-fed; despite its health benefits.
Only 57 percent of babies born in Alabama are breast-fed.
UAB Hospital is joining a national effort to reverse this trend.
It is taking part in "Best Fed Beginnings", a maternity service that supports a new mother's choice to breast feed.
Eighty-nine other hospitals around the country are also taking part in the program.
The purpose is to revamp each hospital's maternity care services.
Alabama is ahead of only Louisiana, Mississippi and West Virginia in breast-feeding rates.
