The state Health Department now says for the first time, it will track a full summer's records of heat illnesses and deaths. It's an effort to cut the number of heat injuries and fatalities.
The incidents reported each day will be reviewed to see how heat is affecting the state's residents.
Alabama recorded 8 heat-related deaths last year. So far this year, there have been just 5.
