A Federal Emergency Management Agency Hazard Mitigation Grant was given to The City of Tuscaloosa last Thursday. It will be used to install an Early Warning System that will provide emergency notifications to the public.
Notifications will be available by telephone, text message, or via pager for any resident of Tuscaloosa that signs up. The system will send alerts for emergencies such as severe weather, hazardous chemical spills, or boil water advisories. It will greatly increase warning time for Tuscaloosa residents.
The City of Tuscaloosa expects to receive several other grants through FEMA's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. Some of the other grants would be used to purchase emergency generators for the waste water treatment plant and to build community safe rooms.
The warning system should be operational within the next year.
