Suspects charged in Gadsden animal cruelty case

Two men have been charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty in connection to an illegal breeding operation. 160 animals were recovered from the suspects' home.

Anthony Smith and Brian Ragsdale are in the Etowah County Detention Center awaiting a court appearance Thursday in municipal court. Authorities chose to misdemeanor charges over felony in hopes of expediting the case.

" It could take months to see a judge in circuit court," Lt. Paul Cody

Also, authorities say it will be easier to prosecute only one count despite the fact more 100 animals were found in the East Gadsden home

The Humane Society of Etowah County says it supports misdemeanor charge. It has been given the ok to give medical treatment to the animals, however management is asking for donations to help get the animals back to good health.
