Alabama education leaders say they will ask that the state be exempted from part of the No Child Left Behind law. The goal of that section is to have all students performing at the proficient level in math and reading by 2014.
The state will submit the request next month.
The request is based on implementation of the state student achievement goals, called Plan 2020.
That plan calls for all high school graduates to be prepared to get a job- or pass first-year courses in a university, community college, or technical school.
