Thousands pack Chick-fil-a restaurants for Appreciation Day

Chick-fil-a restaurants in the Birmingham Metro were filled beyond capacity. It's all part of the chicken chain's appreciation day -but with a controversial twist. The company recently took a public stance against same- sex marriages.

"We support our local businesses and what they stand for does have an effect on why we go to them and give them our business," Julie Cole, a customer said.

Today isn't just about eating chicken it's about standing up for what they believe.

Chick-fil-a President Dan Cathy says he's standing behind the Biblical definition of marriage and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee declared today national "Chick-fil-a Appreciation Day."

Cars had to park on the curbs at the Chick-fil-a off Highway 280 and Highway 119 in Pelham. The branch on Lakeshore didn't get a rest as a constant stream of cars rolled in. And Fultondale was bumper to bumper just trying to get close to the building. With no drive through window, customers in Southside had to wait in the summer heat but no one really seemed to mind.

"I think so many times our Christian values have been pushed under the rug and this is a small way that I can just show my support," Patricia Tate, a customer said.

But not everyone is eating more chicken today...

"People need to understand it's not a matter of stifling free speech, it's more a reaction to where the company's revenue has been placed," Kyle Pugh, Board Member, Central Alabama Pride said.

"It's time we stood up," Harlon Wyatt, a customer said.
