A special called meeting of the Birmingham Board of Education had to be canceled late Tuesday because not enough notice had been given, and the meeting would have been in violation of the open meeting law.
The meeting, which would have gone into executive session, was expected to deal with the two temporary restraining orders against the local board. The board may decide to drop the legal challenges.
We'll find that out Wednesday morning. Lawyers for Birmingham's board will face off with attorneys for the State Superintendent of Schools and attorneys for local school Superintendent Dr. Craig Witherspoon. At issue is whether Witherspoon will keep his job and whether the school board understands it must comply with a state takeover.
