New law could cut down on metal thefts

Posted: Updated:

Thefts of copper and other metals are a big concern for law enforcement.  But a new law taking effect August 1st is designed to reduce the number of those crimes.  That law governs the sale of recycled metals.  It requires buyers and scrap yards to get more information from sellers.

The new law also requires business buying scrap to make a photo copy of the seller's I. D., and get a detailed vehicle description.  Authorities say that the rising scrap metal prices in recent years led to the increase in metal thefts.
