Texting ban takes effect this week

Posted: Updated:

A law designed to keep eyes on the road and hands on the wheel takes effect this week.

The texting ban is one of at least two new laws that go into effect on Wednesday, August first.  Texting, emailing, and instant messaging while driving will be illegal in Alabama.  Violators will face fines, and possibly higher insurance rates.

Lawmakers approved the measure back in April.  Alabama is the 38th state to ban use of electronic messaging while driving.

The state Department of Public Safety says distracted driving caused more than 1,200 accidents in 2010, and claimed at least five lives.
