A popular anesthetic used to sedate patients during surgeries has been added to the Alabama Controlled Substances List. Propofol was added by the State Committee of Public Health because of the potential misuse of the fast-acting drug.
Drugs and other substances are placed into five different "schedules" based on abuse potential. Public risk or individual health is also taken into account. The State Committee listed propofol under Schedule IV. Other drugs listed within Schedule IV are Darvocet, Xanax, Ativan, and Versed.
The new classification for propofol will go into effect on August 27, 2012.
