A more walkable and workable downtown Birmingham would be appealing to many.
City leaders hope to create such an environment by connecting downtown to its industrial surroundings.
Mayor William Bell, Operation New Birmingham and Integrated Medical Systems broke ground on what will be improvements to the newly designated Sloss business district.
The plans include several streetscape improvements, to promote foot traffic. The long term vision is to connect the area to Railroad Park and promote more growth in The Magic City.
"When you take the successes that we have and build upon it. It leads to more and more success, so that's what we're working on is to let people know that we are a 'can do' city," says Bell.
The City of Birmingham is putting $375,000 toward the streetscape part of the plan, which is expected to take a year to complete.
