Montgomery's city council has approved a controversial plan to change the name of the Rosa Parks Avenue Branch Library, but her name will be kept on the sign.
The the council voted unanimously to renamed the library the Bertha Pleasant Williams Library in honor of the city's first black librarian. Beneath the new name on the building's sign will be "Rosa Parks Avenue Branch."
Council members and the mayor called the decision a compromise. It comes shortly after state Rep. Alvin Holmes said changing the name would send the wrong message to the world.
