A former Birmingham Southern student who committed church arsons in 2006 may be released from prison as early as this week according to Bibb County District Attorney Michael Jackson.
Bibb County Circuit Judge Marvin Wiggins granted Russell Lee DeBusk's request to merge his state prison sentence with the time he spent in federal prison. Wiggins ordered DeBusk to be place on five years of unsupervised probation.
DeBusk will complete two hundred hours of community service; those hours are to include his participation with church-building mission groups and speaking to youth about his case and how his life has been affected by his decisions.
District Attorney Michael Jackson says his office and the community are outraged by Judge Wiggins' decision. He believes DeBusk should serve his full sentence. DeBusk pleaded guilty to five counts of Arson-second degree and five counts of Burglary-third degree following a string of fires that destroyed rural Alabama churches.
