Trinity Hospital relocation to Highway 280 halted

BIRMINGHAM - AL -

The large, unfinished hospital building on Highway 280 will stay empty a little longer.

Trinity Medical Center lost its first round in a four year legal struggle. A Montgomery judge reversed approval of Trinity's certificate of need application. The fight pits Trinity Medical Center against Brookwood and St. Vincent's hospitals.

The judge ruled the state health planning and development agency was wrong to have granted a certificate of need in the first place because occupancy at Trinity's existing hospital isn't high enough to justify a new facility and Jefferson County already has more hospital beds than is considered necessary.

Trinity Medical Center released this statement,
"We plan to appeal Judge Pool's decision to the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals and will seek an expedited review."

In full disclosure, Meteorologist James Spann is chairman of Trinity's board of directors.  It is an unpaid position.
