Supreme Court ruling could affect Duke murder sentence

SHELBY COUNTY - AL -

A recent Supreme Court ruling could once more reduce the sentence for Mark Anthony Duke.

Duke was a teenager in 1999,  when he was sentenced to death for the murders of his father and three other people in Shelby County.  Two of the victims were children.

But a 2005 Supreme Court ruling banned the execution of juveniles, and Duke's sentence became life without parole.  But now, Duke's sentence could be reduced again.

The Supreme Court recently ruled that states cannot impose mandatory sentences of life without parole for juveniles convicted of murder.  The sentence may still be given, but only after a sentencing hearing.

A court must now decide whether the ruling will impact duke's case.
