Federal health officials are now requiring drug makers to train doctors on safe use of painkillers.
The Food and Drug Administration says the measure must be taken to reduce the misuse and abuse of long acting opioid pain relievers.
Drug companies will be required to provide education to prescribers.
The goal is to train at least 60% of prescribers within three years.
The new requirement will affect about a dozen prescription drugs.
