Drug investigation underway at Uptown Novelty

JEFFERSON COUNTY - AL -

Yolanda Marshall is blown away to find out that a drug investigation is happening right next door to where she works. Marshall says, "It's just really shocking and frustrating, and I'm a little dismayed by it. To have that type of business right next door to you and your not knowing what's going on."

Marshall is a motivational speaker, who owns "Gems in the Making."

Marshall says, "To really learn of something like this on a day that I'm having a event a motivational talk to encourage our girls and women." The drug known as spice has brought officers to uptown novelty in Jefferson county.

Lt. Davis with the Jefferson county sheriff's office says they received a tip that two adults bought the drug at the store and were using the spice in the parking lot. That's when officers launched their investigation. Davis says, "We are currently investigating to determine if these type substances are actually being sold from this business."

Davis says because the investigation is still underway, he's not sure if a criminal offense has occurred, he did not confirm or deny if any employee would be arrested or charged with drug trafficking or distribution.

"Nobody in custody at this time and I don't know if any arrest will be made, it will depend on what we find in the investigation," says Davis.

And that's because when officers seize the drug commonly known as "spice" officers have to submit it to the department of forensics for testing. Once investigators receive the test back and if it *is* determined as spice, that's when arrest warrants are made.

Meanwhile, Marshall who pushes people to stay away from drugs is in a state of the disbelief, to find out that the neighbors next door might've been pushing people to do the opposite. Marshall says, "We really don't want that type of business nearby being that we're trying to help our teens and we really don't want them, we *want* them to say no to drugs."
