Police warn not to celebrate with gunfire

BIRMINGHAM - AL -

If you plan to celebrate this Fourth of July in Birmingham. You better know the rules.

No fireworks and no ''celebratory'' gunfire.

The Birmingham Police Department is cracking-down. It will utilize ''shot-spotter'' to target offenders and extra-officers will be on patrol.

If you're caught shooting fireworks or a gun, you will be arrested.

Sgt.. Johnny Williams, public information officer for the Birmingham Police Department said, "We'll have a number of extra patrol officers, we really want to combat celebratory gunfire. A lot of people still like to celebrate by discharging their weapons into the air. It is illegal, it is very dangerous, you can kill someone or seriously injure someone."

The shot-spotter technology is able to detect the difference between a gunshot and a firework pop.

Birmingham police say if you hear any celebratory gunfire in your neighborhood, to contact them immediately.
