BIRMINGHAM - AL -

2013 is the 50th anniversary a pivotal year in the Civil Rights movement.  Plans are underway for a year-long commemoration.  Wednesday, Mayor William Bell announced the latest member of the advisory committee--singer and Civil Rights icon, Harry Belafonte. Belafonte says he has a strong history in Alabama. In 1963, he helped raise money to get people out of jail, who were a part of the Selma to Montgomery march.  In a conference call, Belafonte talked about his ties to Birmingham and his commitment to what he calls an ongoing struggle.  Former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice has also been named as an advisory board member.
