Need relief from the heat? The Bessemer Police Department may be able to help. It's starting the annual fan drive for seniors and opening cooling stations Thursday.
Bessemer residents 65 years old or older who currently live without fans or air conditioners can apply for a fan. Applicants are asked to call the police department at 425-2411 and leave their information.
On Thursday and Friday, the city will allow people to seek shelter from the heat at three cooling stations. They will be located at the Bessemer Civic Center's south meeting room, the front lobby of the Emergency Operations Center and the Bessemer City Hall auditorium. The stations will be open from 10 am until 4 pm. Water is available at all three stations.
