After a historic season in which the UAB baseball team captured its first Conference USA Tournament Championship in program history, 13 student-athletes are competing in summer collegiate baseball leagues across the country, from Massachusetts to California.
Below is a look at how each player is performing in the summer league ranks through June 24:
Jeff Schalk || Hyannis Harbor Hawks || Cape Cod League
Schalk has showcased his C-USA All-Freshman team skills in one of the top summer collegiate baseball leagues in the country. The Wheaton, Ill., native ranks second on the Hawks in batting average, sporting a .294 clip with five hits in 17 at bats and leads the team in on-base percentage at .429. He has also drawn four walks.
The outfielder has played in seven of the Hawks 10 games and is teammates with East Carolina's Jeff Hoffman, a fellow All-C-USA Freshman team member.
Chase Davis || Lima Locos || Great Lakes League
Davis, who saw time both in the outfield and on the mound for the Blazers in his freshman season, has blossomed for the Lima Locos playing the outfield and both corner infield positions.
Davis, who has already earned a Great Lakes League Player of the Week honor, is hitting a blistering .442 (23-for-52), leading the Locos and fourth in the conference. Additionally, Davis finds himself amongst the league leaders in hits (2nd) and runs scored (14, T-3rd), playing in 16 of the team's 17 games.
Of his 23 hits, seven have gone for extra bases, featuring five doubles, one triple and one homer as the Montgomery, Ala., native has also knocked in nine so far this season. Furthermore, Davis sports an on-base percentage of .525 and a .636 slugging percentage, along with six multi-hit games, including four three-hit contests.
As a pitcher, Davis has made just one appearance, firing two thirds of an inning, walking two, and striking out one without allowing a run to score.
Ivan De Jesus || Lima Locos || Great Lakes League
De Jesus has battled injuries while competing for the Locos, playing in seven of 17 games. The outfielder has collected four hits in 19 at bats, scoring three runs, alongwith a double, one homer and five RBI.
After missing two weeks of action, De Jesus went 2-for-7, featuring a home run in the Locos 4-3 win vs. the Licking County Settlers in 15 innings on June 24.
Ruben Tresgallo || Lima Locos || Great Lakes League
In two starts, Tresgallo sports a 1-0 record and an even 4.00 ERA for the Locos' staff. The right-hander has pitched a total of nine innings, surrendering four earned runs on nine hits. The hard-throwing Puerto Rico native has totaled 10 strikeouts to four walks and of the nine hits allowed, only two have gone for extra bases.
In his last start, Tresgallo earned the win against Hamilton Joes, firing six innings and recording four strikeouts.
Dylan Munger || San Luis Obispo Blues || California Collegiate League
The southpaw from Muscle Shoals, Ala., has been nearlyuntouchable through his first three appearances for the Blues. In 15 innings, Munger has yielding only one earned run off 11 hits for a 0.60 ERA, which tops his team and ranks second in the CCL.
Munger has a 4:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, punching out 16 batters compared to only four walks. He is holding the opposition to a .193 batting average against him.
Tanner Bryant || Gastonia Grizzlies || Coastal Plains League
Just as he was for the Blazers during spring, Bryant has served as a shortstop and pitcher for the Grizzlies.
At the plate, Bryant has appeared in 11 games, hitting at a .255 (12-for-47) clip with seven runs scored and two RBI. The Newnan, Ga., native has started to heat up recently, collecting a hit in five of his last six games.
Bryant has made one appearance, yielding four runs in two innings of work.
Sam Kelley || Gastonia Grizzlies || Coastal Plains League
Kelley, like Bryant, has appeared on both the mound and in the field for the Grizzlies. In three outings on the mound, the lefty has totaled three innings, giving up two earned runs.
Tyler Mims || Woodstock River Bandits || Valley Baseball League
As a member of the River Bandits, Mims has seen time both as an outfielder and designated hitter. For the season he has played in 12 games, making 10 starts with eight hits in 39 at bats.
A native of Hoover, Ala., Mims has knocked in nine andscored six times. His most impressive game of the season was a 3-for-5, five RBI showing against the league's Winchester Royals.
West Kent ||Woodstock River Bandits || Valley Baseball League
Kent, like fellow Blazer De Jesus, has also been bitten by the injury bug seeing game action in only five contests this season. The middle infielder posted a three-hit game vs. the Front Royal Cards, but has not competed since June 11.
Matt Morse || Lakeshore Chinooks || Northwoods League
Morse has seen most of his playing time at shortstop for the Chinooks, playing in 13 of 25 games. So far, Morse has knocked in five runs and put down a team-best six sacrifice bunts in addition to scoring five times.
Ryan Ussery || Lakeshore Chinooks || Northwoods League
As an outfielder for the Chinooks, Ussery has roamed the outfield in five games, registering two hits and walking three times, whileplaying along side UAB teammate Matt Morse.
Tyler Hamby || DeKalb County Liners || Midwest Collegiate League
During the 2012 season, Hamby saw a majority of his game action at third base. For the Liners, he has shifted over to shortstop, where he has played in 10 of 19 games.
Hamby has collected four hits, including a double, walked four times and drove in three. In 10 games played, Hamby has flashed some leather, committing only two errors in the field.
Ryan Prinzing || Oswego Cats || Chicago Suburban Baseball League
Prinzing ranks second on the Cats in batting average, hitting at a .333 (11-for-33) clip. In addition, the Oswego, Ill., native has knocked in three runs and walked seven times, sporting an on-base percentage of .463.
The outfielder has collected three multi-hit games, including a 3-for-5 performance back on June 16. He hit safely in the first six games of the season for the Cats.
