
The 80th Women's State Amateur Championship began Tuesday at the Hoover Country Club and will continue through Friday.
This championship featured 18 holes of stroke play
qualifying for seeding purposes into the match play on June 19.
The
championship flight will
then play match play, with the round of 16 on June 20, followed by the
quarterfinals and semifinals June 21, and the 18-hole final on June 22.
Alison Hovatter of Meridianville shot 72 to lead the stroke play seeding and earn top seed. She will face 16th seed Taylor Appleyard of Prattville, who shot 93.
Nine-time winner Kathy Hartwiger, who plays at Hoover
Country Club, shot 73 to claim the second seed. She faces Nancy Gavin of
Jackson Gap, who shot 89.
Hartwiger won the title last year, as well as in
2010, 2007, 06, 05, 04, 03, 02 and 1999).
Third seed is Molly Winnett of Kimberly, who shot 76. She faces Birmingham's Connie Bousquet, who shot 84.
Fourth seed is Bailey Gray of Springville, who is a former winner of the State Junior and plays for Samford. She shot 77 and faces Hoover's Lakin Eddy, who shot 83.
Fifth seed is Piedmont's Erin Gunnels who shot 79 and squares off against Samantha Patterson of Red Bay, who shot 83.
Sixth seed is Ashleigh Whisenant of Attalla who carded an 80 and faces Logan Chaney of Scottsboro, who shot 82.
Seventh seed is Suzanne Stanley of Decatur who had an 80 and faces Lea Green of McCalla, who shot 81.
Eighth seed is Carolyn McCalley of Birmingham who shot 81, as did her opponent on Wednesday, Tuscaloosa's Lucie King.
There are six other flights and they will be contested via double elimination match play June 20-22.
