Several people are homeless after an apartment fire in Shelby County. It happened Monday afternoon at River Place on the Cahaba. Some of the tenants were in their apartments when the fire broke out.
Fire Chief Buddy Tyler says the apartment manager provided the six people displaced with a place to stay Monday night. The Red Cross also offered assistance, but everyone made it out safely. One resident says he's pretty lucky thanks to guy who was working near-by.
A typical work day turned frantic for A T & T employee Ray Randle. He was standing next to his truck waiting on a customer when he saw smoke coming from building 2000 in River Place on the Cahaba. He went around back and saw flames. "I just started running around knocking on people's doors."
"Luckily the guy from a t & t came up and told me to get out because it engulfed the place pretty quick." Steven Kervin lived under the apartment where the fire started.
Fire Chief Buddy Tyler says "Fire was shooting through the roof." Gary Buford and his dog also got out quickly thanks to a knock on the door. "It could have been worse, I only lost a bedroom and a couple of TV's."
In all, 6 people are displaced. The Fire Chief says 8 apartments are in this building and all have smoke and water damage. One apartment is destroyed and another one received fire damage. Randle called 9-1-1 immediately and once firefighters arrived.. they put out the flames in 30 minutes. Looking back, Randle says he knew he needed to act fast. "I knew there was no way they would be able to stop that without someone getting hurt.
The fire is still under investigation. Chief Tyler says they're still trying to determine how it started.
