In every US presidential race since 1980, the proportion of females who voted has exceeded the proportion of males who voted.
The 19th Amendment, ratified in 1920, gave women the right to vote. We have Susan B. Anthony to thank for getting the ball rolling.
Anthony was a suffragist. On this day in 1873, she was found guilty in New York of breaking the law by casting a vote in the 1872 presidential election. Anthony was fined $100 but never paid the fine.
Anthony died in 1906. In recognition of her dedication, the US Treasury put Anthony's portrait on one dollar coins in 1979, making her the first woman to be so honored.
