It was no laughing matter when comedian Jerry Lewis ended up in the hospital Tuesday night. 

Lewis' office says the actor was admitted because of a blood sugar imbalance, but he has already been released. 

For decades, Lewis used his celebrity to bring attention to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, serving as the host of its annual telethon until last year. 

Lewis' reps say he is recovering in New York.
