Birmingham school board creates alternative to state plan

Posted: Updated:

A cloud of uncertainty hovered over the Birmingham City School Board meeting Tuesday.

Just last week, in a 5-to-4 vote the board rejected the state's plan to restructure its finances and operations, creating more money in its reserve fund. At the time, board members who rejected the plan, said they did not have enough time to review the plan as well as make their own recommendations.

Board member and president Edward Maddox tells ABC 33/40 that, later that week, the board met with Superintendent Dr. Craig Witherspoon to make revisions, which included keeping schools open and restructuring the proposed staff cuts.

Maddox says, if Witherspoon presents the plan at the meeting, the board will make a vote.

State School Superintendent Dr. Tommy Bice says he will present a recommendation Thursday on whether a state takeover is necessary for Birmingham City Schools.
