Two TU Track Stars Reach NCAA Finals

Senior Carl Stones and junior All-American Chris O'Hare both advanced to the finals of their respective races at the 2012 NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships Thursday at Drake Stadium.

Stones placed third in his heat and fourth overall in the semifinals of the 3,000m Steeplechase with a mark of 8:39.70. He also became the first Tulsa runner in school history to compete at the NCAA Championship in the steeplechase.

O'Hare finished fourth in his heat of the 1,500m semifinals with a mark of 3:40.14.

"Carl and Chris did what they were supposed to do today in terms of advancing to the finals. They took care of business," Tulsa head coach Steve Gulley said. "They're both extremely fit right now, and they are in shape for a good Saturday.

"It's hard to gauge at this point where they will end up in the finals, but if they run the race they're capable of running, they will both be a factor in the end."

O'Hare will be the first to race for a national championship when he competes in the finals of the 1,500m run at 11:17 a.m. June 9 at Drake Stadium. This will mark his second-straight appearance in the finals of the event. He won the national championship in the indoor mile this past February, and he placed 11th in the outdoor 1,500m last season.

Stones will compete at 11:52 a.m. on the same day in the finals of the 3,000m Steeplechase. Both races will be shown live on ESPNU.

A top eight finish in the finals by either participant will score team points for Tulsa and will give that competitor first team All-American status.
