BIRMINGHAM - AL -

New sidewalks and crosswalks will ensure local students return to school safely in the fall. Several cities and a county have received Safe Routes grants around 150 thousand dollars for the roadside upgrades.

Jefferson County was awarded the money to put sidewalks and crosswalks infront of Chalkville Elementary School along Chalkville School Road between Park Brook Trail and Merry Drive.

In Montevallo, sidewalks, crosswalks and pedestrian signs will be added to Island Street at Montevallo Elementary School.

Sidewalks will be built outside Pleasant Grove Elementary and Middle School along 9th Avenue, 5th Avenue, 7th Avenue and 9th Street, as well as the intersection of Park Road and 5th Avenue.

There will be drainage, curb and gutter and sidewalk upgrades to Abrams Elementary School on 12th Avenue in Bessemer from 24th to 28th Street.

The City of Pinson was given funding to add sidewalks along Innsbrook Parkway from Alabama 75 to Brittany Place to help Rudd Middle School and Pinson Valley High School students get to school safely.
