Jose Trevino staked Oral Roberts University to an early lead with a 11st inning single, but No. 4 Baylor University proved too strong in the end, eliminating the Golden Eagles by a 5-2 count on Sunday afternoon at the Waco Regional. ORU's season ends with a 38-25 record.
With the win, Baylor (46-15) stays alive and must beat Dallas Baptist twice to advance to the Super Regional round of the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship.
Sophomore Alex Gonzalez (6-3) went 6.2 innings and took the loss for the Golden Eagles after allowing four runs on eight base hits. After some fine glove work by Nate Goro got the Golden Eagles out of a 11st inning jam, ORU struck first in the bottom half of the inning. Logan Domenico opened the inning with a double and came around to score on a Trevino single, putting his team ahead by a 1-0 count.
The Bears were quick to respond, surging ahead in the 3rd inning. Logan Vick stroked a single into left field, bringing a pair of teammates home to give Baylor a 2-1 lead.
Baylor left runners in scoring position in the 55th and 6th innings, but the Bears made Gonzalez pay in the 7th. Jake Miller led the frame off with a single and later came home to score on a fielder's choice by Vick. One batter later, Big 12 Conference Player of the Year Josh Ludy sliced a double into the right field corner, scoring Vick to make the score 4-1.
ORU's best chance to mount a rally came in the bottom of the 7th, which started with a walk to Jared Schlehuber. Four batters later, with Goro at the plate, a wild pitch brought the senior first baseman home to cut Baylor's lead to 4-2. But a strikeout by Goro would end the inning with a runner on second.
The home team got the run right back in the 8th inning. A fly ball by Dan Evatt carried over Domenico's head in right field, starting the inning with a leadoff triple. One batter later, Cal Towey's sacrifice fly bumped the lead back to 5-2.
Trevino's second base hit of the day led off the bottom of the 9th for the Golden Eagles. But he never advanced off of first base, and the Golden Eagles were beaten by three runs.
Vick led the way for the Bears with a 4-for-5, three RBI afternoon.
Trevino was the lone Golden Eagle to tally multiple hits. Brandon Healy's 6th inning single gave him six for the Regional, a team-high.
ORU's Regional appearance was their 15th in a row, matching their 15-year string of Summit League Championships. With Friday's victory over Baylor, the Golden Eagles have won at least one Regional game in eight of Rob Walton's nine seasons as Head Coach.
