
Saturday concludes National Police Week,so Friday evening,Calhoun County paid tribute to its fallen law enforcement officers.
A group of wives and girlfriends of the county's law enforcement officers placed flowers below a plaque remembering 27 officers who died in the line of duty. The most recent was Anniston officer Justin Sollohub, killed last August.
In 2011, 72 officers died on the job. That was 29% increase from 2010. 29 of the incidents took place in the south.
The ceremony was held in downtown Anniston's Centennial Memorial Park. This past legislative session, state lawmakers officially designated the park as the state's official memorial for fallen officers.
