Drillers Pitcher Draws Inspiration From Mother

TULSA, Okla. -

In a way, every outing for Drillers relief pitcher Coty Woods is Mother's Day. When he first comes out to the mound, he writes her initials in the dirt.

"I always tell everybody she's my best friend and my hero," said Woods.

Woods didn't pitch on Mother's Day but that wasn't the only reason she didn't see the game.

"She died about six months ago... had lung cancer for a long, long time," Woods explained. "Being Mother's Day today makes it a little tough, but you get through these things."

Woods has done much more than just "get by" in his pitching performances this year. In his 17 innings pitched, Woods is 3-0 with 7 saves and 17 strikeouts.

And Woods has yet to give up a run.

Not bad for a guy who went in the 33rd round to Colorado in 2009. The success doesn't surprise pitching coach Dave Schuler.

"He goes about his business. He knows what he has to do," Schuler said. "He comes in, throws his pitches, and locates well."

"Consistency is the name of the game and then you're looking for opportunity. So hopefully it comes his way sooner or later."

If Coty Woods continues to put up these kinds of numbers, place your money on "sooner."
